After 10 years and over 100 shows featuring hundreds of artists, the continuing mission of Lowery Gallery is to bring artists and viewers together in an environment of freedom and nonexclusion.

Lowery Juries National Show Of Outsider Art

I was chosen to jury the national show of outsider art / art brut by Minnapolis’ prestigious Interact Center for the Performing and Visual Arts. The show, entitled Take Me To The River, featured over 68 works chosen from over 250 entries. Definitely an honor for me to do this, but it was even more exciting to meet the amazing artists and staff at Interact, and the experience has inspired me to form something similar here in Georgia. My interest in art has leaned heavily towards art brut and outsider art for some time now, and with my interest and work in mental health ( I currently serve on the Dept. of Human Resources Regional Board of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Addictive Diseases ), providing a place for challenged artists to grow and develop seems to be where my path is leading. There is a great deal of support for this idea. Read below and please contact me if you have an interest in this area.

NEW: Services For Artists With Disabilities

We are developing services for artists with disabilities and mental illness. Our goal is to provide a place for these artists to learn and develop their creative abilites to their fullest potential and have a gallery to exhibit and represent their work. If you have an interest in this area, please drop us an email or give a call. If you would like to refer someone you think would benefit from such a service, or if you feel you have discovered unrecognized talent, please contact us. We currently have very limited space for only a few individuals, but hope to expand to serve the needs of mentally challenged artists. Get out of the city and come to the gallery to enjoy some great art, outdoor sculpture, horses, pigs, dogs (dogs welcome here!), and nature...and meet some good people in the process.

We had a blast at the opening and “Terror! War! Rocks! Girls!” is still on display. Featuring New York City artist Mister Law in addition to Athens artists Paul Thomas, Cynthia Pendley, Natalie Stewart and Jeff Hanan. View the invite.

NEWS: Recently enjoyed a visit from reps from Georgia Southern University checking out the art of Annie Wellborn and Carter Wellborn. A donation of folk art was recently made to GSU that included Annie and Carter’s works, and these good folks acquired several more. We have many new works by Annie and Carter in the gallery now.

This stunning painting was chosen as the COVER for Athens’ magazine of arts and culture, The Flagpole (thanks for all the inquiries, but this painting has SOLD).

Lowery Gallery is an Athens, Georgia art gallery displaying paintings, sculpture, photography, ceramics, pottery, folk art, outsider art, and art brut. We serve clients in Athens, Atlanta, Lake Oconee and Madison County.We are the area’s largest gallery and the only area gallery with an emphasis on Outsider Art.
